Thunder Hours: How Old Methods Offer New Insights into Thunderstorm Climatology

چکیده

Abstract Lightning data are often used to measure the location and intensity of thunderstorms. This study presents 5 years from Earth Networks Global Detection Network (ENGLN) in form thunder hours. A hour is defined as an during which can be heard a given location, hours calculated for entire globe. Thunder intuitive thunderstorm frequency where 1-h interval corresponds life-span most thunderstorms, hourly temporal resolution also represents long-lived systems well. Flash-density-observing incredibly useful, but they have some drawbacks that limit how quantify global activity on climatological scale: flash density distributions derived satellite observations must sacrifice great deal their spatial order capture diurnal convective cycle, detection efficiencies ground-based lightning not uniform space or constant time. Examining patterns context lends insight into without being heavily influenced by network performance, making particularly useful studying climatology. The ENGLN dataset offers powerful utility studies involving first shows very consistent with past measurements electric circuit using only data. Then, this showcases anomaly fields, designed analogous temperature anomalies, diagnose changes relative long-term mean both time space.

New insights into old methods for identifying causal rare variants

The advance of high-throughput next-generation sequencing technology makes possible the analysis of rare variants. However, the investigation of rare variants in unrelated-individuals data sets faces the challenge of low power, and most methods circumvent the difficulty by using various collapsing procedures based on genes, pathways, or gene clusters. We suggest a new way to identify causal rar...

Cholera Epidemics of the Past Offer New Insights Into an Old Enemy

Background Although cholera is considered the quintessential long-cycle waterborne disease, studies have emphasized the existence of short-cycle (food, household) transmission. We investigated singular Danish cholera epidemics (in 1853) to elucidate epidemiological parameters and modes of spread. Methods Using time series data from cities with different water systems, we estimated the intrins...

Gallstones: new insights into an old story

Gallstones, particularly cholesterol gallstones, are common in Western populations and may cause symptoms such as biliary colic or complications such as acute cholecystitis or gallstone pancreatitis. Recent studies have allowed for a better understanding of the risk of symptoms or complications in patients with gallstones. In addition, newer data suggest an association of gallstones with overal...

Gout: new insights into an old disease.

Gout is an autoinflammatory disorder associated with deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in joints and periarticular tissues. Recent advances suggest that the innate immune system may drive the gouty inflammatory response to MSU. These findings prompt questions concerning how the innate immune system recognizes MSU and the identities of the receptors involved. In this issue of the JCI...
